Year of Hemp
Save the planet - sow a seed.
Support for legalizing marijuana grows rapidly around U.S.
Approval for medical use expands alongside criticism of prohibition.
November 23, 2009 Washington Post Article

- c. 3,700 B.C Emperor Chen Nung (Shen Nung), classifies hemp as one of the “Superior Elixirs of Immortality”.
- Li Shi Chen (1573-1620) compiled the most extensive Chinese Materia Medica, called Pen T'sao Kang Mu which states about hemp: "The Ancients used this medicine to remain fertile, strong and vigorous . . ." and hemp seed will "aid in the growth of the body’s muscle fiber…"
- Quoting books even older, the Pen T’sao proclaims that whole hemp seed is useful "to mend and help all of the central areas and benefit the Chi [life force]."
- In Chinese medicine, hemp seeds fall under the categories of sweet, neutral, and clearing heat, operating through the channels of the stomach, large intestine, and the spleen and remain widely used today as one of the 50 "fundamental" herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

- The medicinal potential of marijuana
is well documented in North America also--in 1860, for example, the convection of the Committee on Cannabis Indica of
the Ohio State Medical Society reported on cannabis'
therapeutic applications in treating a vast number of ailments, including:
mania, whooping cough, asthma, chronic bronchitis, tetanus, epilepsy and
withdrawal from alcohol.
- Between the years of 1840 and 1860, more than 100 articles were published in the medical community recommending it for various disorders.
Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis is debated by some, well-documented beneficial effects have been published over thousands of years. Among these are: the amelioration of nausea and vomiting, stimulation of hunger, (in particular in chemotherapy/ AIDS patients), lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective for treating glaucoma), as well as general analgesic effects (pain reliever), and the list goes on.
Highly obscured, (until the interent), yet even more remarkable, is mounting evidence showing that cannabis may CURE a variety of conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and depression.
On October 7, 2003 a patent entitled "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants" (Patent No. #6,630,507) was awarded to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, based on research done at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). This patent claims that cannabinoids are "useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases." It states that this 'new found' property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of ailments. "The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia." Synthetic cannabinoids are marketed as Marinol in the United States and Germany, and Cesamet in Canada.
On 19 October 2009 the US Deputy Attorney General issued a US Department of Justice memorandum to "All United States Attorneys" providing clear clarification and guidance to federal prosecutors in US States that have enacted laws authorizing the medical use of marijuana and recommending against prosecuting patients using medical cannabis products according to state laws. Marijuana's Active Ingredient Shown to Inhibit Primary Marker of Alzheimer's Disease
http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/080906.html
Research done by the Scripps Research Institute in California and published August 9 in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics shows that THC, prevents the formation of deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease.
THC was found to prevent an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from accelerating the formation of "Alzheimer plaques" in the brain more effectively than commercially marketed drugs. THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, as reported in Molecular Pharmaceutics.

In lab and mouse studies, the compound known as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) cut lung tumor growth in half and helped prevent the cancer from spreading, said Anju Peet, a Harvard University researcher in Boston who tested the chemical.
http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Marijuana-Helps-to-Combat-Lung-Cancer-20045-1/
THC has been found to reduce tumor growth in common lung cancer by 50 percent and to significantly reduce the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University, who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies. The researchers suggest that THC might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.
In 2006, Donald Tashkin, of the University of California in Los Angeles, presented the results of his study, Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study. Tashkin found that smoking marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of lung cancer or head-and-neck malignancies, even among heavy users. The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck. But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn’t smoke at all. Marijuana use was associated with cancer risk ratios below 1.0, indicating that a history of marijuana smoking had no effect on the risk for respiratory cancers. In contrast, tobacco smoking had a 21-fold risk for cancer. Tashkin concluded, "It's possible that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana smoke may encourage apoptosis, or programmed cell death, causing cells to die off before they have a chance to undergo malignant transformation".
Wan Tan presented a study at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference showing that smoking marijuana and tobacco together more than tripled the risk of developing Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over just smoking tobacco alone.
Similar findings were released in April 2009 by the Vancouver Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease Research Group. The study presents that smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana, however, was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms of COPD. In a related commentary, Tashkin writes, "…we can be close to concluding that marijuana smoking by itself does not lead to COPD".

Hemp vs. Oxis?
Taken from: http://www.fibronews.com/wordpress/the-7-foods-experts-wont-eat.html
7 DANGEROUS FOODS TO AVOID:
1. Canned Tomatoes
The expert: Fredrick vom Saal, PhD, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A
The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people’s body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals. “You can get 50 mcg of BPA per liter out of a tomato can, and that’s a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young,” says vom Saal. “I won’t go near canned tomatoes.”
The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings) or Tetra Paks.
2. Corn-Fed Beef
The expert: Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of half a dozen books on sustainable farming
The problem: Cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. More money for cattle farmers (and lower prices at the grocery store) means a lot less nutrition for us. A recent comprehensive study conducted by the USDA and researchers from Clemson University found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium; lower in inflammatory omega-6s; and lower in saturated fats that have been linked to heart disease. “We need to respect the fact that cows are herbivores, and that does not mean feeding them corn and chicken manure,” says Salatin.
The solution: Buy grass-fed beef, which can be found at specialty grocers, farmers’ markets, and nationally at Whole Foods. It’s usually labeled because it demands a premium, but if you don’t see it, ask your butcher.
3. Microwave Popcorn
The expert: Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group
The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize—and migrate into your popcorn. “They stay in your body for years and accumulate there,” says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.
The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix.
4. Non-organic Potatoes
The expert: Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board
The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes—the nation’s most popular vegetable—they’re treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. “Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won’t,” says Moyer, who is also farm director of the Rodale Institute (also owned by Rodale Inc., the publisher of Prevention). “I’ve talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals.”
The solution: Buy organic potatoes. Washing isn’t good enough if you’re trying to remove chemicals that have been absorbed into the flesh.
5. Farmed Salmon
The expert: David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany and publisher of a major study in the journal Science on contamination in fish.
The problem: Nature didn’t intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. According to Carpenter, the most contaminated fish come from Northern Europe, which can be found on American menus. “You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer,” says Carpenter, whose 2004 fish contamination study got broad media attention. “It’s that bad.” Preliminary science has also linked DDT to diabetes and obesity, but some nutritionists believe the benefits of omega-3s outweigh the risks. There is also concern about the high level of antibiotics and pesticides used to treat these fish. When you eat farmed salmon, you get dosed with the same drugs and chemicals.
The solution: Switch to wild-caught Alaska
salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic,
it’s farmed. There are no commercial fisheries left for wild Atlantic salmon.
6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones
The expert: Rick North, project director of the Campaign for Safe Food at
the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility and former CEO of the Oregon
division of the American Cancer Society
The problem: Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine
growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production.
But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also
leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk.
In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon
cancers. “When the government approved rBGH, it was thought that IGF-1 from
milk would be broken down in the human digestive tract,” says North. As it
turns out, the casein in milk protects most of it, according to several
independent studies. “There’s not 100% proof that this is increasing cancer in
humans,” admits North. “However, it’s banned in most industrialized countries.”
The solution: Check labels for rBGH-free, rBST-free, produced without artificial hormones, or organic milk. These phrases indicate rBGH-free products.
7. Conventional Apples
The expert: Mark Kastel, former executive for agribusiness and codirector of the Cornucopia Institute, a farm-policy research group that supports organic foods
The problem: If fall fruits held a “most doused in pesticides contest,” apples would win. Why? They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavor. As such, apples don’t develop resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. The industry maintains that these residues are not harmful. But Kastel counters that it’s just common sense to minimize exposure by avoiding the most doused produce, like apples. “Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers,” he says. And increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides (from all sources) with Parkinson’s disease.
The solution: Buy organic apples. If you can’t afford organic, be sure to wash and peel them first.
Eat hemp. Live life.

Class-action Human Rights Tribunal applications are being filed in Ontario by citizens deprived wrongfully of their right to safe and effective cannabis for medicinal purposes because of our defective / ineffective Medicinal Marijuana Access Regulations (MMAR) regime. If you have been refused access to cannabis by your doctor, can not find a family doctor, or have suffered, and been deprived of medicinal cannabis despite a legitimate ailment or condition, you should complete the form below, join the FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" or visit http://treekings.tk to find out more about this movement.
Depriving citizens of a safe, non-toxic and inexpensive natural alternative to costly toxic chemicals and drugs is depraved, abhorrent, and contrary to the rule of law. In fact this situation offends the principles of fundamental justice - as has been ruled time and time again by our Canadian courts - whether Mr. Harper et al. like it, or not.
The research is in, and people are waking up angry. Take part in this movement and fight for our rights to free, safe and effective cannabis medicine. The FaceBook Group "Thyme For Hemp" already has nearly 2,000 members, grows daily.
Its time to stop the reefer madness, and look at this plant from a factual and scientific perspective. Doctors are now prescribing cannabis to children for ADD/ADHD because it is effective, non-addictive and non-toxic - unlike so-called 'traditional' chemical cocktails such as Ritalin.
Canada's first International Medical Marijuana Expo in Toronto hopes to attract people suffering from health problems who are "sick and tired of taking pharmaceutical drugs that have adverse side-effects," says the event's organizer. Congratulations to Marco and his associates and supporters for this important and historic event. Cannabis cures cancer, kills pain that morphine won't and is simply the healthiest, most nutritious, and most useful plant known to humans. This has been the case for thousands of years, but only in the last 60 or so has it been wrongfully vilified by selfish corporate interests.
I personally have used cannabis medicinally in order to recover from toxic poisoning [see: IngersollMouldFoundation], and to regain my weight lost due to the ordeal. My father also now uses it after radiation and chemotherapy nearly killed him.
Kudos again to the organizers and supporters of this movement. Help us to spread the word: Save the planet - Sow a seed.
January 26, 2010 Interview with Rick Simpson

Talk with Rick Simpson
We are honoured to share our amazing 1 hour conversation with Rick Simpson
More interviews will also be posted shorty..
January 20, 2010
Dear Jason,
I
am very sorry your family had to learn the hard way what the medical
system is all about. Unfortunately, it is not just the medical system
but everything the government controls that is working against us all.
I have been through the so-called legal system and the lawyers are just
as bad as the doctors. Lawyers all know that the laws prohibiting
hemp´s use are corrupt, but they like filling their pockets and will do
nothing to change it.
I approached this issue in the proper
way right from the beginning, I hid nothing from the system or the
public. Instead of investigating what I was saying about the healing
power of this oil, the system persecuted me for supplying it. I guess
they thought if they came down hard enough on me that I would just go
away. This would allow them to continue with this insanity and of
course, the bought and paid for media did nothing to bring the real
truth to the public.
What people seem to miss is the fact that we are
being controlled by these monsters with lies and deception. When the
legal system refused to allow the patients to testify during my court
case, that said it all. When you have people that used the oil to cure
their terminal cancer ready to testify and their testimony is not
allowed, that should tell you something about our system, I truly feel
sorry for the Canadian people but I have done all I can possibly do.
It
is now up to the people themselves to finish the work I have started.
All the public has to do is stand up for their rights and all this will
come to an end. If they do not, the evil that is running our country
will win and we will continue to suffer and die needlessly. If I were
in the public´s shoes, I would not hold my breath waiting for the
Canadian system to get anything right. Stand up and tell them you've
had enough and if they refuse to act, they will face the consequences.
I
really don’t think the public will be in a very good mood when they
learn the truth about what the so-called system has been doing to them.
If anyone with the Canadian government has a brain in their heads, they
will do something rational about this situation. If they refuse to act,
then they are the ones putting themselves in harm´s way.
Best wishes,
Rick Simpson
P.S.
I would be happy to speak to the media via telephone or Skype etc. You
can reach me afternoons and evenings, Central European time.

Health Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil
By: Dr. Loretta Lanphier, ND, CN, HHP, CH
"One of nature’s greatest gifts to mankind, Hemp Seed Oil is a bountiful source of high quality nutrition and provides many wonderful medicinal uses as well."
From: http://www.brainready.com/blog/hemp_the_perfect_brain_heal.html

Few natural food sources have withered as much confusion, controversy and misinformation (and lack of information) as hemp – which is unfortunate, and even ironic, given that it is one of the world’s most perfect foods.
Actually, it goes far beyond food, as this super-plant has also been used for centuries as a wonderful source of fibers for clothing and accessories, soaps and oils, and much more. It's even rumored to be the world's "oldest food" consumed by modern man.
But even despite the recent hemp boom which has hit the nutrition & supplements world over the last year, few still know just how impressive this plant is, or that it may qualify as one of the best brain health-boosting & anti-aging foods on the planet.
Have you been seeing more and more health foods, snacks, nutrition bars, oils, breads and other products on the shelves with the word “hemp!” on the packaging? Protein powder that “now includes hemp greens!”, cereals with hemp seeds, hemp drink mixes, hemp bathing oils and soaps? Thanks to a recent explosion of legal hemp growing largely based in Canada (hemp has been legal to grow in Canada since 1998), a version of this plant – and more specifically, the seeds of the plant, has become what many believe to be the next revolution in health foods, based on its rather staggering nutritional profile.
But before we get into exactly why hemp is such a perfect food (and specifically, a perfect brain health food), let’s clear up any misconceptions you might have regarding the hemp seeds legally sold and used in foods compared to its (illegal) other incarnation.

The hemp available today in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and UK is based on a naturally selected strain of the plant, cannabis sativa, which produces effectively no measurable THC, the psychoactive element in marijuana. By law, this Canadian-grown hemp must contain less than .01% THC, which means that no, you cannot get “high” from eating even large amounts of these hemp food products, including the straight seeds or ground powders.
While there may still be some lingering errata with regard to trace amounts of THC showing up on drug tests in some very isolated cases in which persons consumed hemp, the analogy of someone eating a poppyseed bagel and worrying about the trace amounts of opium from the poppy seeds comes to mind.
Bottom line: these hemp food products are THC-free (which is also why they are legal). So put any pot-related misinformation, stereotypes, concerns or fears aside, straighten out your friends and family on the subject, and read on about just why this plant deserves unprecedented attention when it comes to your health as you age...
The nutritional profile of hemp is perhaps the biggest reason for its recent (and historical) praise as one of nature’s truly perfect foods: high in protein, rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (with an uncannily perfect ratio of omega-6-to-omega-3, almost too good to be true), rich in chlorophyll and the green plant phytonutrients like the best green leafy vegetables possess, low in carbs/sugars, high in fiber.
And it tastes great, with a nutty flavor that blows away flax and soy. No soy estrogens or the other negative properties which can make soy inappropriate for some people. Did we mention the extremely high amounts (and perfect balanced profile) of essential fatty acids, which are particularly important for brain health, memory, mood, and concentration?

Let’s look at some of the specifics:
- Shelled hemp seed contains 33 percent pure digestible protein and is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA. A recent report funded by the Canadian government states that hemp protein is comprised of 66 percent high-quality edistin protein, and that hempseed contains the highest percentage of this of any plant source. Hemp also contains three times the vitamin E contained in flax.
- Good fats: while hemp seed is an excellent source of protein that also contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, its most important feature is that it provides both essential fatty acids (EFAs) needed in the human diet–linoleic (omega-6 fatty acid) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). These fats are "essential" because they cannot be manufactured in the body and so must be consumed as food. Hemp has an omega-6/omega-3 ratio of 3.38, which is closest to the optimum 4.0 average recommended by the World Health Organization for the human diet.
- Hemp for Heart Health: EFAs are essential for the health of the heart. Numerous studies showthat substituting healthy polyunsaturated fats such as hemp for saturated fats can reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and fatal cardiac arrhythmia, as well as reduce blood cholesterol levels and decrease the cellular buildup in arteries associated with atherosclerosis. Hemp also contains phytosterols, which have been shown to reduce total blood cholesterol by an average of 10 percent and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by an average of 13 percent.
- Brain health: because EFAs make up a large portion of the brain, hemp is especially beneficial for brain health, particularly memory function. Membrane loss of EFAs has been found in such disorders as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Research has shown that a diet with a proper balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids–such as in hemp oil–may help delay or reduce the neurological effects of these diseases and improve quality of life.
- Skin health: The critical importance of EFAs for healthy skin makes hemp seed oil a highly effective skin care and cosmetic product. Its lipid constituents allow it to permeate through the skin and nourish skin cells directly. For this reason, hemp oil is beneficial for skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. For the health of skin and hair, nourishing and balancing hemp oil is now added to a multitude of soaps, shampoos, skin lotions, lip balms, conditioners and other natural skin-care products.
...the list of hemp benefits goes on, and that's not even getting into the topic of how hemp is also an incredible material for clothing, materials, industrial uses, and more -- and completely bio-sustainable, eco-friendly to the planet (unlike synthetic materials).

The foods, products, and what's out there: at BrainReady, we've become huge fans of hemp foods recently, and have been trying many different brands and varieties of hemp foods (always raw, organic, pure hemp however...no hybrids). Many stores now carry shelled hemp seeds, which are a great way to get your hemp -- as you can eat them straight out of the bag, mix with cereals, put into shakes, however you like.
There are also hemp protein powders, which are usually ground hemp seeds concentrated into a powder to provide a high protein, fiber, and all the other benefits in a powder form that is easily mixed with liquids such as juice or water (and are great after a workout!). Then there's even "hemp milk", similar to packaged soy milk (same form factor and idea as soy milk cartons, but with hemp instead of soy), which have become our replacement for soy milk recently. There are hemp nut butters (very tasty!), and of course, hemp oils (much like flax oil).
A few of our favorites that we've tried (with links):
Living Harvest Raw Organic Hemp Seeds: these are wonderful eaten straight, or mixed with other cereals. Great nutty taste! Our new breakfast favorite.
Living Harvest Hemp Protein Powder: the concentrated, high-protein ground hemp that has become our new post-workout recovery favorite. We mix it with water and drink, but you can also mix it with juice or other beverage if you prefer. Incredible combo of protein, EFA's, branch chain aminos, fiber, wow!
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Seed Butter: this tasty stuff is our new peanut butter. Great on organic whole grain toast, on crackers, or straight!
Nutiva Organic Shelled Hemp: this 5-pound bag is definitely the best, most economical way to get ultra-high quality organic hemp seed...which we use as the basis for cereals, for adding to salads, anything. Hemp is definitely something you want to buy in bulk, and this is a good way to do it particularly as most stores do NOT carry this one, so get it online.
Nutiva Organic Hemp Oil: the best hemp oil we've tried, and this deal (via Amazon.com) is great because you get two bottles for the retail price of one. Hemp oil is great on toast, salads, vegetables, and yes, you can use it on your skin (save money on the expensive anti-aging skin lotioons and try hemp oil...it's incredible).
In summary, hemp is an incredible brain health & anti-aging nutritional powerhouse -- but it's also so much more. Suffice to say that we've made it a dietary staple at BrainReady and are feeling better than ever.

Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life.
The seeds can be eaten raw, are easily and cheaply pressed into oil (the 'seed cake' by-product is easily ground and sifted into a nutty-tasting meal flour), ground into a meal, sprouted, made into hemp milk (akin to soy milk), prepared as tea, and can be used in / added to almost any recipe. The delicious fresh leaves can also be eaten in salads.
Processed hemp food products range from cereals to frozen waffles, hemp tofu to nut butters. Some companies produce value added hemp seed items that include the seed oils, whole hemp grain (which is sterilized as per international law), hulled hemp seed (the whole seed without the mineral rich outer shell), hemp flour, hemp seed cake (the by-product of pressing seed into oil) and highly sought-after hemp protein powder. Hemp is also used in some organic cereals, for non-dairy milk somewhat similar to soy and nut milks, and for non-dairy hemp ice 'cream' and other desserts.
In North America, hemp seed food products are sold in large volumes, particularly from Canada to the USA, and typically in health food stores or through internet mail order.

Hemp nuts
Hulled Hemp Seeds (Hemp Nuts) resemble sesame seeds hand have a rich,
slightly nutty flavor and aroma. Hemp nuts are delicious to eat raw and are
described as tasting something similar to a cashew nut or sunflower seed.

Hemp is an incredible brain health & anti-aging nutritional powerhouse -- and much more. Hemp seeds not only contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life, they are also an excellent source of protein that also contains a robust variety of vitamins and minerals. Its most important feature, however , is that it provides both essential fatty acids (EFAs) needed in the human diet–linoleic (omega-6 fatty acid) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). These fats are "essential" because they cannot be manufactured in the body and so must be consumed as food. Hemp has an omega-6/omega-3 ratio of 3.38, which is closest to the optimum 4.0 average recommended by the World Health Organization for the human diet.
The nutritional profile of hemp is perhaps the biggest reason for its recent (and historical) praise as one of nature’s truly perfect foods: high in protein, rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (with an uncannily perfect ratio of omega-6-to-omega-3 which is almost too good to be true), rich in chlorophyll and the green plant phytonutrients like the best green leafy vegetables possess, low in carbs/sugars, high in fiber. Like flax, wheat, corn, canola, and other major cultivated species, hemp is a crop that can be grown for food and non-food purposes. Whole hemp seed is composed of approximately 45 percent oil, 35 percent protein and 10 percent carbohydrates and fibre. As a result of the numerous nutritional benefits, many new food products containing hemp seed and its oil are finding their way onto the Canadian market, including pasta, tortilla chips, salad dressings, snack products, and frozen desserts.
Recent scientific research indicates that essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be manufactured by the human body and deficiencies can cause undesirable chronic conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and eczema. Therefore, hemp seed and its by-products can be used to supplement diets poor in EFAs in order to maintain health. One by-product, hemp seed oil, contains 30% of its weight in EFA-rich oil, delivering an ideal combination of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids for long term use. Hemp seed oil may have potential health benefits for diabetes, cancer, lupus, asthma rheumatoid arthritis, depression and hypertension. Hemp is one of only two plants that contain both EFAs as well as gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA has been found to have many properties ranging from anti-inflammatory to anti-depression. It can lower cholesterol and help to correct dyslexia, dyspraxia, and hyperactivity (ADHD). Approximately one-third of the population lacks the enzyme to metabolize GLA from omega 6 and must take GLA from an outside source to maintain good health, and hemp is an excellent way for them to do so.
Hemp oil has traditionally been used for industrial functions such as lamp oil, paint, and varnish, but today is finding major new markets in the cosmetic and functional food industries. One of the fastest growing sectors for hemp seed oil is the body care products market. The EFA content of hemp oil makes it an ideal topical ingredient in both leave-on and rinse-off body care products. The EFAs in lotions and creams help to soothe and restore skin, while their content in lip balms, conditioners, shampoos, soaps, and shaving products are emollient and provide a smooth after-feel. With cosmetics companies taking advantage of the moisture-retention qualities of hemp oils, the functionality and marketability of industrial hemp oil is expected to continue to increase steadily. Increased consumer awareness and product availability are also expected to help expand the markets.
Hemp fibre contains no measurable amounts of THC, and is renowned for its resistance to rotting and wear and tear, as well as for its high tensile properties that make it durable and strong. These qualities have been recognized through real life applications over thousand of years. The stalk of the plant offers two distinct types of fibre:
- The outer portion of the hemp stem contains the bast fibres, the strong, long, and slender fibres that provide the strength and quality attributed to hemp. Bast hemp fibre excels in durability and absorbency, has anti-mildew and anti-microbial properties, and is in demand for certain applications, such as car panels in the automobile industries in the U.S. and Europe. The panels have the advantage of being stronger, lighter, and relatively less expensive than traditional car panels.
- The core fibre, sometimes referred to as the hurds, is derived from the sturdy, wood-like stalk of the hemp plant. Similar to the bast fibre, the core fibre possesses anti-mildew and anti-microbial properties. It is currently being used for animal bedding and simulated cedar shakes, as it is twice as absorbent as wood. It is also used for manufacturing hemp paper, although only small quantities are currently being produced in North America.

Can Small-Scale Sustainable Farming Feed the World?
Farmer Champions ‘Moral Farming’ as a Better Way to Raise Food
November 29, 2009 | David Grant | ABC News
Meet the best, loudest (and only) Christian-libertarian-capitalist-environmentalist-lunatic farmer on the face of planet Earth.
Joel Salatin, self-professed owner of that lengthy honorific, has a personality bigger than the Grain Belt and a genius for farming that has made him a glib, brilliant prophet to a growing movement of back-to-nature farmers from California to Swoope, Va. (pop. 1,326), where his 550-acre Polyface Farm rests at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Mr. Salatin’s agricultural preaching has influenced food author and journalist Michael Pollan (”Omnivore’s Dilemma”) and earned him a prominent spot in the documentary “Food, Inc.,” making waves worldwide.
What makes Salatin so powerful on the farming scene is a unique mix of ingenuity, faith, and business savvy.
Whether making farming lectures feel like religious revivals or handling customers’ questions at the family store, it’s this blend of agricultural potency and inspirational vision that enables him to gross roughly $2 million annually and stand at the front of a growing community of farmers that may look like quintessential American rustics but whose techniques are anything but traditional.
Farming Ecosystem Built on Christian Principles
On a foundation of Christian principles, Salatin has built a farming ecosystem where cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits interact ecologically in a way that goes beyond conservation.
“What we’re looking at is God’s design, nature’s template, and using that as a pattern to cut around and lay it down on a domestic model to duplicate that pattern that we see in nature,” Salatin says.
What that means for Polyface in practical terms is that the cattle graze different areas of pasture every day. Then chickens pick through the same fields, eating bugs and spreading cow manure before clucking back to mobile coops.
The farm’s pigs generate fertilizer by rooting around the floor of the barn, lured by sweet corn into aerating the mix of hay, cow manure, and wood chips. The finished compost is spread on fields. This process not only takes almost nothing out of the environment, it puts nutrients back in.
“We believe that the farm should be building ‘forgiveness’ into the ecosystem,” Salatin says. “What does that mean? That a more forgiving ecosystem is one that can better handle drought, flood, disease, pestilence.”
‘Is There a Righteous Way to Farm?’
Salatin concedes that when his father bought the farm in 1962, the family’s initial emphasis on sustainable farming had more to do with environmental concerns than faith convictions. But as the business evolved, Salatin began to see himself situated at a unique place in America’s moral conversation.
“We should at least be asking, Is there a righteous way to farm and an unrighteous way to farm? … The first goal is to at least get people to appreciate that how we farm is a moral question,” he says. “Once you get to that point, then you can actually discuss: What is a moral farm? What is a moral way to raise a chicken?”
How farm animals are treated on the majority of farms today dismays Salatin.
What Americans do to pigs, chickens, and cows speaks ill of the nation’s moral health, he says. “A culture that views its life from such a manipulative, disrespectful stance will soon view its citizens the same way and other cultures the same way. It’s how we respect the least of these that creates a moral-ethical framework.”
Don’t be confused: Salatin is no crunchy-granola transplant to Appalachia. He graduated from archconservative Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., with a degree in English. While he appreciates the “bearded, beaded, braless, Woodstock revolution” set who make up the bulwark of environmentally conscious farming, he’s delighted that half of those coming to visit his farm nowadays are involved in the home-school movement.
It’s this broad appeal that makes Salatin unique, says Teresa Heinz, the American philanthropist whose foundation recently awarded him a $100,000 award for his work. “Salatin is a person who is accessible conceptually and conceptually acceptable to a huge number of people – not just the Massachusetts guys, but people from anywhere,” Ms. Heinz says.
What breaks Salatin’s heart is that the rest of the religious right has been largely uninterested in picking up the banner of environmental stewardship.
“I think the whole religious right community should be very apologetic and repentant that we – who should have carried the banner of Earth stewardship – got co-opted on that message,” he says.
